Strength Through Adversity

We all encounter struggle, pain, adversity and hardship at times and sometimes the hardest thing to do is to wear a smile on your face when it feels like the world is against you. We all go through stages in life where we truly feel like life couldn’t chuck another spanner in the works, and then it does. Inside we often let out a mighty – FARRRRRK! Post this, it is easier to react to your adversity in raw emotion and in ways that don’t reflect the person you are, than to acknowledge where you are and still press forward in positivity. In these times there is often guilt, regret, and anguish that follow.

The challenge we all face in life is to show up as the best version of ourselves when times are tough. The ability to do this isn’t easy and takes work, acknowledgement of circumstances, and time to really understand where you are at. It sounds cliche’d, but stopping and reflecting is key to moving forward as a higher version of yourself.

Does this sound like you right now? When was the last time you took stock of all that is bothering you? Do you understand deeply the triggers for your underlying pain and suffering? Are you constantly looking in the rear view mirror at events that you cannot change? Is yesterday impacting today and you feel like it will impact tomorrow too? My question to you is this, when will it stop? When will you take action to help yourself? When will you focus on you, knowing that you are in full control of your emotions and actions?

I have said it in previous posts that I’ve been in times of struggle myself in recent times and the biggest realisation for me was understanding that I am in full control of this present moment. I can’t change the past, I can’t put too much expectation on the future, but I can control the next step I take forward.

Life is full of pain, hurt and suffering. Believe it. You are hurting now. and will no doubt be hurt or let down again in the future. So what are you going to do about it? Will you play the victim and let your circumstances consume every waking breath? I hope not. Life is too short to dwell on all the shitty things that take place.

For me, a shift in mindset and how I view my life was an awakening that spurred me forward. Recently going through a break up was tough, and still is at times, but my life isn’t over. I couldn’t be more appreciative for the amazing time Lozzie and I spent with one another. I miss the companionship, the laughs, the adventures, but I’ll always have those locked away in the memory vault. I am focusing on me, taking stock of who I want to be and where I want to go.

I had a realisation that in the past, I poured all my energy into the negative aspects of my life. We all have limited energy to utilise each and every day, and feeding negativity is not good for moving you forward. It didn’t move me forward. It kept me in a negative mindset.

Harness your energy to focus on the things that light you up each and every day. Be appreciative for the little things that occur and direct your energy there to encourage you to smile more. It works. It will shift you more than you can imagine. There is no way of having a positive impact on the World when you a drowning yourself in negativity. You can’t have a positive life with a negative mind.


The best way to start moving into a more positive mindset is to buy yourself a journal. In that journal, each morning write down 3 things you are grateful for. These things can be tangible or intangible, but this works best when not focusing on material possessions. Think of traits you have, your family, your friends, a situation or memory you have, etc. Some examples below:

I am grateful for my sense of taste and the ability to delve into the flavours of food each and every day.

I am grateful for my inner drive which helps to cultivate me taking steps forward in my career.

I am grateful for the gentleman who held the door open for me today at work when he didn’t have to.

When you complete this exercise, feel what you are writing down. Repeat each day and see how it starts to shift you.
